Discover a new measure of success

Goalsworth is an idea for an augmented reality overlay that would evaluate and assist a user's progress toward personal and collective goals. The idea was introduced in Rob Morano's entry in the Future of Life Institute's 2022 Worldbuilding Contest. Besides an AR overlay, Goalsworth could be delivered through a website, mobile app and even a printed workbook.

The point of Goalsworth is to help people achieve objectively worthy goals. A deliberate, systematic approach seems necessary if we are to reach our potential as individuals, as communities and as a species. It also seems likely that humanity will fail to flourish, and perhaps even to survive, if we do not rigorously pursue a set of shared, explicit, measurable goals.

While people have long had lists of things they shouldn't do (legal codes, religious commandments, etc.), it's remarkable that positive directives have been exceedingly few and far between and that a comprehensive "moral operating system" remains nonexistent. But what exactly are we trying to achieve beyond avoiding prison and perhaps hell? Shouldn't we develop a detailed, quantified set of key performance indicators? What's our plan?

Goalsworth attempts to answer these questions in a principled, rational, even scientific way. It's an effort to discover a new measure of success. To define what it means to be a good person. And to help us become better.

Are we capable of being motivated by logic, evidence and long-term, global thinking? Or will we continue being guided merely by proxy signals and hackable rewards? Will we strive for success directly, or will our decisions continue to be driven by loosely correlated physiological promptings and cultural contingencies?

It's time for us to rise above being passive and reactive subjects of the unfolding of Darwinian evolution. It's time for us to become more active participants in our personal and collective fates. It's time, in fact, for truly intelligent design.

Stay tuned.
